CMSCA Grade Championship Results:
December 10, 2011
Congratulations to all the young chess players who played a long tournament day Saturday, December 10th at Southwest Middle School. The rated tournament comprised four games for each player and determined the city championship for each grade level. In addition, the top three scores from each school determined team prizes in each grade.
Below are the players from each school and some noteworthy achievements, including several champions! Also, to check your child’s new or updated rating, go to www.uschess.org and click on “players and ratings” (it takes a few days to process results).
Socrates Academy - Kris Vanamali (3 out of 4 and received a medal), Jonah Seguine (3 out of 4 and received a medal).
Selwyn – Daniel Bridgeman, Spence Bradley, Matthew Sie, Audrey Zhou, Joshua Perry, Justin Perry, Owen Fix. Spence beat or drew several players much higher-rated, and the work he is doing at home on chess is showing. The fifth-graders placed third as a team.
Collinswood – Jaiden Soular, Avery Soular, Grant Parris, Carter Worchester. Collinswood was one of the few schools to field a first grade team, and they finished in the top five as a team.
Eastover – Sue Holderness, Emily Holderness, Zoe Dunlap, Luke Mitchell. The mostly girls team did well in the fifth grade section. Luke finished as the team’s top scorer with 2 out of 4. They finished top five in fifth grade.
Endhaven – Robbie Reicht and Harsh Munagekar. Harsh continues his awesome tournament year. He won 3 out of 4 to win the fourth place trophy.
Myers Park Traditional – Lots of players and awards, so I will list by grade:
First grade – 2nd place overall team trophy. Caroline Darwin, Jake Walker, Banks Krause, Robby Thompson (top scorer with 2 points).
Second Grade - 1st place team trophy! Zane Davis, Harrison Cole, Noelle Ethridge, Nick Wattenburger, John Le (5th place trophy with 3 out of 4), Nathan Sherman (2nd grade city champion with a perfect 4 out of 4!).
Fourth Grade – 1st place city co-champion team! Campbell Krause, Autumn Chapman, Imani Ethridge, Kyle Birch, Anthony Hailey (tied for third place with 3 out of 4), Tyler Allen (4th grade city co-champion with a perfect 4 out of 4!).
Fifth Grade – 2nd place team trophy. Robert Cole, Samuel Fitzgerald, AJ Cook (tied for third place with 3 out of 4).
Next tournament is the two-day Southern Scholastic Tournament, Jan. 7-8, 2012 at West Charlotte HS. This is the usual qualifier for funding for the nationals. To have the best chance of winning funding, four players or more from each school in each section comprise a full team. Try to set aside that weekend and make plans for chess.
