Thanks to everyone who helped make the 3rd Annual Young Master Chess Winter Tournament a success!
We had more than 90 children spend their free day with us on a rainy Monday, Jan 23rd. The administration, teachers and custodial staff of Myers Park Traditional were great hosts. Thank you! Assistants Chris Callahan and Shouri Gottiparthi kept the children focused, analyzed many games and gave guidance on a ton of puzzles.
Students played 3 tournament games, analyzed their games afterward, competed in a team puzzle competition, and played an afternoon game of chess trivia. Hopefully they all came away better chess players and with more knowledgeable of chess terms, people and geography.
We had teams of 5 players, broken up over 4 sections:
In the "A" Country group, team Algeria from Myers Park Traditional narrowly beat team Armenia from Eastover. Members of the winning group were: AJ Cook, Connor Larson, Parker Harris, Ava Christensen and Caroline Darwin. Team Australia from Barringer was third and Team Argentina from Waddell, Sharon and Collinswood was fourth.
In the "B" Country group, team Brazil from Myers Park Traditional won. That team was: Colin Perrin, Harrison Cole, Nathan Sherman, Robert Cole and Walker Joyce. Team Belgium from Selwyn was second, team Bolivia from Myers Park Traditional was third and team Bulgaria from Eastover, Elon Park and South Charlotte was fourth.
In the "C" Country group, team Colombia from Myers Park Traditional won by a half point. That team was: Jamie Inskeep, John Le, Nicholas Goudes, Grace Santanna and Cooper Davis. Second place was team Croatia from Myers Park Traditional. Third was team China from Selwyn and fourth was team Chile from Dilworth.
In the "I" Country group (sorry, there were not enough "D" countries), team Indonesia from Selwyn won first place. They were: Walker Terrell, Ross Guinan, Adrian Eley, Russ Bradley, Palmer Cox and Jack Powers. Second was team Italy from Selwyn, third was team Ireland from Endhaven and Eastover, fourth was team Iceland from Myers Park Traditional, fifth was team Israel from Dilworth and Eastover and sixth was team India from Myers Park Traditional.
The winning puzzle teams were team Australia from Barringer and team Croatia from Myers Park Traditional.
Additional events that Young Master Chess will be hosting include a state championship training camp March 10 and a spring tournament on March 30 (another teacher workday). Details on these will be posted in February.
Also, don't miss the CMSCA team tournament on Feb. 11, the Fake Copper Blanket on March 3, and of course the State Championship on March 17-18.
See everyone at the next one!
